About

Funded by the World Bank and implemented by South Asia Cooperative Environment Programme (SACEP), with the support of United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the project development objective of the Plastic Free Rivers and Seas for South Asia (PLEASE) Project is to catalyze actions that reduce the flow of plastic pollution into South Asian Seas.

Clean Maldives won an innovation grant of 119,820 USD, which is being utilized to pilot scalable solutions for reducing single-use plastics in the hospitality and foodservice sectors of the Maldives.

Through this grant, the project focuses on:

Climate Collective Foundation (CCF) supports as a knowledge partner, in knowledge dissemination and deployment of one innovative solution with two hospitality partners in Maldives.

Offerings

Stakeholder Engagement

Conducted interactive sessions for stakeholders to share knowledge, adopt sustainable practices to combat plastic waste by providing tailored solutions that reduce environmental impact while enhancing operational sustainability. Stakeholders engaged included: Anantara, Oaga Resort, Siyam Group, Crossroads, Adaaran Group, Solite Resturant. Read the need analysis report to know more.

Fully Funded Pilots

Providing 2 select resorts with fully funded opportunity to implement innovative plastic-reduction solutions to mitigate plastic waste on the resorts, supported by expert guidance and detailed impact assessments.

Innovative Solutions Hub

Showcasing cutting-edge innovations from the Global South that mitigate plastic waste. This includes alternatives to plastics, plastic waste-to-value technologies, and breakthroughs in sustainable packaging. Check the case studies below to see some top solutions.

Scope

Starting with reducing single-use plastics in the Maldivian hospitality sector, the project will soon expand to broader environmental challenges, including renewable energy, wastewater management, and climate resilience. By partnering with innovators from the Global South, we strive to create a scalable ecosystem of solutions that benefits island nations worldwide. The current initiative will pilot one fully funded solution, offering comprehensive implementation support, with the aim of creating a model that can be replicated and scaled.
